All Coaches and Area Reps,
PLEASE forward this message to your coaches and/or
discuss a few items with your parents prior to the PPK at Sheldon on August
8th.
Sheldon is the host of the 2009 PPK and we want
welcome everyone to the campus to do the mandatory weigh-in and PPK
competition. Last year Sheldon hosted and the event went fairly well. I
would like to speak about a few things from last year in an attempt to improve
and hopefully move a bit faster this year. Someone else may be giving more
specific direction in the near future, but here are a few things to keep in
mind:
1) Please park in front of Sheldon HS in the
regular parking lot. Please do not park in the swimming pool parking lot. If
necessary, park behind the school. Last year my truck was broken into in
broad daylight at around 1 PM during this event (my window was smashed).
Please warn people about leaving valuables in the car.
2) Please line the teams up in the courtyard
prior to entering the right side doors into the cafeteria. Please ensure
that kids are not hanging on tree branches, peeling paint from the building,
or tearing up flower beds while they are in the courtyard. All this happened
last year causing hundreds of dollars in damage that the school (not Pop
Warner) was left paying.
3) After lining up in the courtyard, a team will
enter the cafeteria together. The kids will need to be weighed in at the
electronic scale. Immediately after, the book will be given to the people
verifying team books. Last year it took several hours for books to be
returned, so be ready for the delay and have someone willing to linger to pick
up team books.
4) After exiting the cafeteria through the
opposite doors, please walk back through the courtyard toward the front
parking lot, walk past the pool to the football field (nobody should walk
through the gym area, please, for security reasons).
5) While at the football field, the head coach
and assistant coaches of each team will be responsible for getting the kids
lined up, and moving through the events. A WVPW Board member will be
directing traffic, but coaches should be ready to pretty much run the drills,
including marking distances and writing down the distances.
6) A WVPW Board member will be collecting the
papers after the distances are calculated.
7) The only bathrooms open will be the
port-a-potties on the football field.
8) Food and beverages will likely be available at
a reasonable price, possibly even an option of a $5 burger basket lunch for
parents and/or kids.
9) Bob Canaday usually sets up a tent offering
attire and gear. It is likely that he will have many options for
kids/parents/coaches for the upcoming season.
10) Immediately following the PPK event, teams
are asked to move off the field to make room for other teams. If people like,
they may watch from the stands or from the paved area around the field.
11) Keep in mind that Sheldon is the host, but is
not responsible for organizing the event. I appreciate the offers that people
have sent via email assuming that Sheldon is coordinating the event. I have
tried to direct people to Kim. However, I will be on site for pretty much the
entire day to manage the facilities and keep people flowing to their next
destination.
12) In summary, Sheldon is happy to host the PPK,
but we need to move teams through quickly in order to give all 1400 athletes
an opportunity to complete the event. Please keep kids, parents, coaches,
etc, out of hallways and interior restrooms. Please pick up an trash on the
ground (if it is not yours it is likely from a Pop Warner person so please
help).
Thank you all for your consideration of the
above. This will be a great event and it will take us ALL to make it a
success!
Sincerely, Mark Watson, Sheldon Area President
